In a marriage of print, digital and video resources, Babcox Media has acquired Fort Myers, FL-based Automotive Video Inc. (AVI), a provider of DVDs, manuals and online educational resources to technicians and shop owners. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Founder Paul Louwers will continue to lead AVI as president and CEO.
The deal will bring more video content to Babcox’s websites as an extension of the technical content the publisher already provides to its readers. The addition of AVI also will give Akron, OH-based Babcox more services that it can offer to advertisers and other business partners. “When we first started talking with AVI, we discovered that they were already working with a number of companies that advertise in our properties. So, we will certainly extend this service to the ad agencies and companies that currently use us for things other than advertising, like research, lists and custom publishing,” said Jeff Stankard, vice president and publisher.
For AVI, being integrated into Babcox’s media group allows the company to bring its educational material to a wider group of audiences — essentially Babcox’s readers both in the automotive aftermarket but also in the other verticals the publisher services with both e-media and print properties. In time, Babcox foresees extending AVI’s capabilities into the tire, performance, collision, commercial trucking, engine building and powersports markets. “AVI is expert at bringing desired technical education both to a video format and with a related print/manual component,” Stankard explained. “Partnering with us allows them to bring their special expertise to more techs and others who appreciate and need the content in this fashion.”
